  1. Lots of cracked slides these days caused by less than perfect metallurgy, hardness, fitting, etc.. compounded by high pressure 9major loads. My goal in developing a great load is to maximize performance while NOT destroying me or my gun. The common sense recommendation is to use a slower powder to reduce case pressure. OK, slower powders measured & ranked how? Powder manufacturers charts are considered 'guidelines' as to 'relative' burn rates, and should maybe be considered most accurate with their own product? Add to this, the different burn rate charts available have conflicting ranks among the most popular powders used for 9major. And now for the rule of thumb Slower powders usually require more charge weight than fast powders to achieve the same velocity (assuming same bullet, barrel, primer & cart.). More conflict. So all of this has got me thinking... (probably over-thinking) The following is compiled from my own 9major load data over the years. This is a high level comparison - not a true apples to apples, since this is with 4 different barrel configurations, different temps, etc.. The last column is the charge weight of a 100% full 9mm case. Nice for relative density comparisons.
  2. Gentlemen, Seeking advice / tips / general knowledge for loading 3N38 in 9 major. I have ran WAC, HS-6, & AA#7 all with 124 & 115 pills. Gun in question is a full length STI lower with an SV upper, no holes. New infinity barrel, Cheley comp. Loading on a 650 XL. Can go out to 1.170 COAL max. Running 115g MG JHP's. Primary question is loading 3N38. As you know when you get @ 9.5g the case is full. I mean full. Which dies do you use? Currently I'm running all Dillon dies. I have a Lee seat/crimp in one die. Is this a better option? Perhaps a U-die in station 1? Having trouble with such full case capacity. Not to be rude, but I don't need load data, just tips and tricks on working with and loading high case volumes such as this in 9mm. Any input is appreciated. I will dance at your wedding, and yes, I will wear my speedo.
  3. I started working up some short OAL major loads over the weekend and have been pleasantly surprised with the results so far. No excessive pressure signs with any of my loads, and very consistent velocities around my 170PF target. Curious what experiences others have had loading with this constraint (OAL 1.100 - 1.125) ? barrel= KKM 5.5", 3 holes, CK 3-chamber comp bullet= MG124JHP OAL= 1.120" 6.7 gr WAC 1381 fps, 9 ES (171.2 PF) 8.5 gr 3N38 1379 fps, 8 ES (171.0 PF)
  4. Good day all. I'm about to work up a steel load for my open gun. Basically this: Glock 34 LW barrel 11lb recoil. Jager 4 port comp. major loads are MG JHP, CCI SPP, 9.2g of VV 3N38 at 1.140 OAL. Makes 169-170 PF very consistently and shoots and runs great. I have several Speer 90g FMJ's I was going to try with the 3N38. Does anyone have experience with a similar load? Naturally I'm not concerned with making any PF or extreme accuracy with 35 yards max SC distance. Just reliability and mainly soft & flat running. When working up my major loads I had to get to 7.4 g before gun would cycle reliably. I'm thinking of starting @ 6.8g and chronoing from there. I'll post findings just in case anyone is interested. Thoughts, ideas, opinions, suggestions. Thanks in advance guys.

  6. Well, I like to fiddle around, and I like wildcats, so lately Ive been running my nine loaded to 1.208, tested in both matches and practice aprox 4-5000 rounds, and its so smooth,, so far so good, next out is 1.22 and 1.24, neck tension and bullet hold is still good (slightly hollow base 124gr alsa pro), just gotto see how long chamber is reambed. Any of you tried this long? upsides are extended brass life and has no issues in mags, and room for moaaaaar powder and less pressure. We are suddenly talking *within* spec CIP and SAAMI with VV 3n38. ever 0,5mm or 0,02 in theory drops another 1000PSI or so roughly. Brass is sized and expanded so its basicly a straight wall 9, or a short supercomp
  7. Getting some loads worked up for my new open gun. Need a starting place, I'm reading loads that are all over the map I'm using 124MG JHP bullet These are the ranges I am finding OAL 1.225-1.255 9.4-10.4 grains 3N38 PF 165-180 Tell me what you are shooting and what gun setup you have (i.e. popple holes, no holes, etc) I am looking for 38SC data only.
  8. Has anyone ever tried SP-3 in 38 super? According to my estimates it would take something like 12-13gr of powder to make major with a 115gr bullet, but if it's anything like SP-2 it should easily fit in the case. Seems like a 9mm case full would be awesome for a minor load Anyone?
  9. Hello. I am new to reloading. I have loaded 9mm and gotten up to 9 major with my open glock using the formula start low n work up with a chronograph. I am now going to start loading for 38 super minor PF I'm looking for a good target plinking load to test out a new gun I just bought. Not an open gun yet but that's in the works. I have 115 .356 I pulled from some crap loaded supercomp I got some time back and I also have a lot of 124 x treme HP That I use for 9mm. I have 3n38 , autocomp, and 800x ( that I hate to measure) any starting points would be awesome. I know there's lots of data out but I'm sure someone here has this gun n loads for it w success. I am loading for a tanfoglio limited pro (sorta) it's a 1995 version. A precursor if u will. Still has the 4 3/4" barrel. No comp no ports. (Yet ?) Thank you all in advance for all the help. This place has been an absolute treasure trove of information help and parts.
  10. Hi All, I need some assistance. I have been using Vhit 3N38 as my primary powder for my loads. Anyone have any recommended alternatives since 3N38 seems to have vanished?
  11. So after 15 years, I've been forced to change powder since VV N350 is no longer available. Seems 3N38 is the only other VV option still in stock. Does anyone have a proven load for 38 Super 5" (32 Twist) 3 port HybriComp barrel, and 115gr bullets? Or something that will get me started? Thanks, Dave Pruitt davidpruitt.com
