Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I loaded a batch of new Star Line brass and had trouble with the cases sticking in the flaring die (Dillon 550b) I am wondering if I wet tumble brass with stainless pins if I will have the same problem with brass sticking in the die. When I clean brass in a vibratory cleaner I never have that problem. I'm concerned if I invest in a wet tumbler and media that I will create the same problem I experienced with the new brass. Any experience or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
  2. I am wondering if there can be any problems associated with loading .357 with exactly the same powder, weight and bullet as .38 special. I am thinking that it is much easier to load .357 cases for all my .357 revolvers, loading some with .38 special recipe and others with .357 recipe. Ideas and advice? Thanks
  3. I had an interesting "accident" yesterday while loading some 9mm cartridges. I was using a new powder for the first time so I wasn't sure how much volume the desired load would take in the case. I set the powder measure to 5.4 grains and loaded about 30 cartridges. Then I accidentally discovered that my powder measure had been bumped or jarred and the poise moved from 5 grains to 6 grains! I unseated the bullets and re-measured the powder. BUT, it would have been so simple to grab a bunch and test fire them to check the load. I suspect, if I had not noticed the poise being moved I may very well have had a serious accident. I have been wondering if anyone has ever experienced this type of mistake. In ten years of handloading approximately 20,000 cartridges this is a new and scary experience.
  4. This is maybe a silly question but I suspect someone will have a good and simple answer. I am wondering how to wash my bore snakes in the washing machine without getting them hopelessly tangled or, worse yet getting them washed down the drain. Solutions??
  5. I stumbled on this thread and I'm sure glad I did. I have loaded a lot of autocomp in 9mm and liked it. Then it seemed to become unavailable locally ??? I did find CFE but was not sure about loading. How fortunate to find that I can use the same loads as I did for autocomp!! It will save me a bunch of time and experimentation Thanks a lot guys
  6. Very helpful guys. Thanks a lot. I hope never to have first hand experience with this but reassured by your responses.
  7. I'll start by saying this may not be the proper place for this question but it seemed the best I could figure Ok here goes I have wondered for some time about the possibility of a squib load (with a bullet stuck in the barrell) followed by another round shot into the plugged barrel. I am sure it would ruin the gun, or the barrell for sure. Would it always result in harm and injury to the shooter? As a long time reloader I recon this is always a remote possibility. I am referring to pistol shooting. What are the odds of serious injury. Or just a scary and bad experience. Maybe some of you have experienced this of heard of someone who has.
  8. I reload lots of pistol ammunition and enjoy loading 9mm and .40 because I can easily see the powder in the case before seating the bullet (using a dillon 550b) when loading .38 special the case is deep enough that I can't see the powder charge without a special effort on each round. It makes me nervous wondering if I might miss an empty case sometime. Is there an easy way to insure to verify each powder charge. I have a great LED light on the loader but can't seem to get a good visual angle to check the powder as I work. I'm wondering what others do. OR do you just trust the powder measure?
  9. Load data always list maximm overall length but I have a question about bullet seating LESS than the listed length. How much less than the listed OAL is acceptable. Is it important to be within a given distance. I am specifically interested in pistol cartridge in 9mm, .38 special, .40 S&W. I have tried to get close to OAL but have not been too concerned about a bit less.
  10. I came across A reloading article recently that cautioned not to touch primers with bare hands. It said that the oil from your skin could contaminate the primer and cause an eventual misfire. Is there any truth to this. I have reloaded many thousands of cartridges and handled each primer in the loading process. Now I'm wondering if some of these may, in time, cause a problem. What do the experts think?
  11. Powder was PB 4.2 gr. 180 gr xtreme RNFP bullet. OAL 1.31. All the same for both batches of ten
  12. Primer experiment Recently I had an opportunity to buy 1000 cci magnum small pistol primers. I had some concern about using them so I conducted an experiment. I loaded 20 identical .40 S&W cartridges and put CCI magnum primers in 10 and regular CCI small pistol primers in the other 10. I fired all 20 thru my chrono and the results were: the average of the ten cartridges with magnum primers was 859 ft per second. The average of the ten standard primers was 854 ft per second. I was surprised with these figures and my conclusion is that, in this application, there is virtually no difference in performance between CCI magnum small pistol primers and CCI standard small pistol primers. I am wondering what any of you might make of this information.
  13. I stopped in my local gun shop on sat to inquire about supplies. No powder but he had a box of primers. When he handed it to me I noticed they were magnum primers (cci 550's). I looked puzzled and he quickly said "these are fine, no problem, don't worry use 'em just like the 500's I promise you will have no problems at all". I bought them. And now am having second thoughts. I'd like some opinions from you experts. Should I use them the same as the 500's? Or not?
  14. I have been struggling to get powder recently and yesterday found a couple of pounds of IMR PB at a local store. I want to load .40 S&W. With a 180 grain X-treme plated bullet. I have not been able to find a load in my loading manuals. Information is scarce for X-treme bullets and PB powder. The combination is really hard for me to figure. Any suggestions or experience would be helpful. Thanks
  15. My son has asked me to load some .40 cal cartridges for him. I do not have a .40 pistol so I am not familiar with loading for that caliber. I have the dies, the powder, primers, and brass. I'm not sure what bullet weight to use for general, all around practice ammo. There is a wide range of weights so I would like some suggestions from veterans in the hand loading game. Thanks.
