  1. An undocumented feature isn't really helpful. A google search turned up several videos and webpages where people show that it works or complain that setup is "not easy", but not a single page where they explain what they did. I have one on order to see if I can make it work, but it would be nice to have a starting point other than vague statements that it can be done.
  2. I don't shoot 3 gun or switch gear, but found out how great the ELS system is when traveling by plane. I can detach all my mag pouches and the holster and it packs up really nicely. I also don't have to worry about the holster getting thrashed by baggage handlers.
  3. PA seems sort of far from Cleveland. Are there ANY USPSA clubs withing 20 miles of Cleveland? I looked up the Area 5 page, and all of the clubs listed seem to be at least 100 miles away.
  4. Oh. In practice sessions, I work to reduce my times. At a match, I slow down and shoot at about 85-90% of my top speed. As long as I'm watching my sights, I remain reasonably accurate.
  5. It really all depends on where you are in your learning curve. Let's say that Max (and when I say Max, I really mean any one of those phenoms that are at the top of our game: Chris, JJ, KC, the list goes on) can shoot a stage in 20 seconds. Johnny D Class shoots in 50 seconds. He can improve his hit factor by shooting more points in the same time, or shooting the same points in less time. It's a tradeoff, but where will he see the most gain? It's probably easier for him to shoot/run/move faster or cut down his transitions from position to position, because there likely many many things he can do to shave time off from that 30 second differential. Johnny D Class starts running like a bat out of hell, dropping a few more points, but really cutting into his time and sees his scores improve despite shooting a lot of C's, D's and the occasional M's. Couple years down the road, Johnny's an A class shooter, and can shoot the same stage in around 24 seconds. Can he shave 4 seconds off his time to catch up to Max? Possibly, but he's never going to be up there until he settles down, learns some control and shoots more points. If he's still hitting lots of C's and D's, he's probably taking extra shots on steel, which is costing time and will not let him cut into that 4 second differential. If he isn't practicing accuracy, he's not going to do well at calling his shots, and maybe taking the occasional miss. Once you get to the top, your ability to shoot/run/move faster becomes very difficult, because you're starting to reach the limits of your physical speed. I don't know if anybody else counts their ammunition when they're at a match, but if I go to a match that is 240 rounds, I expect to use around 250 rounds. I don't want to be firing extra rounds as that wastes time. How do I not fire extra rounds? I try to make sure I hit what I'm aiming at. Steel should go down in one shot. My paper I should be expecting to shoot A's, because even if I miss, it's probably going into the C or maybe even the D. Accuracy is the key. I'm not saying that everything has to be A's, but if you're settling for C's and D's, then you're probably hitting M's as well. (I do hit a lot of C's, which means my accuracy still needs work). My times are not far off the top guys; I'm about 20% slower than them on most stages. I could go faster, but in doing so, I risk dropping my C into a M. I can get lucky and hit it, but if I'm pushing my speed limits too much, I'm not going to be able to stay lucky consistently; the inevitable M or NS is going to wipe out whatever gains I have made. The secret to doing well is not to focus entirely on speed, or accuracy, but to find the balance that gets you the best results. Speed can only get you so far, but if you're accuracy isn't there, you won't go the rest of the way.
  6. Blargh. I just looked at the waiting list date more closely. It's June 27th, the same day that the Area 1 Championship ends. Considering the number of people at Area 1 who will be traveling/unable to access a computer, that's a lot of people that will have to depend on others to get them on to the waiting list. Is it worth trying to contact someone to see if they could possibly push the waiting list date to something like the 28th of June instead?
  7. Which one? By the time I got there (last squad on the stage), he'd eaten two on the left side! Heh, the first one. I have mixed feelings about not being the only person to tag it - I'm glad I wasn't the only one, but feel bad that it took any hits at all! The props were great, and I wish we'd gotten more pictures of the podium, the stages, and the fireworks to kick off the match on Friday. What a great idea that was! I had a great time at the match, but I also had the benefit of shooting on Friday with phenomenal weather. I tried hanging out with a couple of people I knew on Saturday, and lasted about 10 minutes before I gave up and hopped back in the car. Kudos to the Range Officers and match staff that toughed out 2 days of blowing snow and mud. My first time in Texas, and I'll definitely go back if I can work it into my schedule. I stuffed myself on Barbecue while I was there, although I will admit that the restaurant that had draft beer options of "Bud, Bud Light, Miller, Miller Lite, Coors or Coors Light" left a little bit to be desired. Everybody else seems to be getting their videos uploaded, so here's mine: We accidentally taped over the bowling ball stage, and luckily missed taping the stage where I tore that big jagged tear through the brontosaurus.
  8. Nawww...As long as there's an outlet mall nearby, I can buy warm clothes.
  9. I'm bringing money. Are there going to be vendor tables, or will I have to spend it all on beef and beer?
  10. http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USTX1464 Ten Day forecast looks good for Friday...giddyup!
  11. When will we know which shooting period we got on to? Some of us will need to make our travel arrangements based on that. Chris
  12. My DTC Weather Watch has officially begun... http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/ustx0521 Too bad that their long range forecast is only 5 days in advance.
  13. Night before a big match, I was really, really tired, but couldn't fall asleep. I tossed and turned until around 5am, when I think I finally drifted off. I got woken up at 6am by my buddies for breakfast so we could be on the range for 7am. To try and wake myself up, I sucked back a couple Red Bull in the car. No effect. A half hour later, I reached into the glove box for the caffeine pills I keep in case of late night drives and popped one of those. After 15 minutes, feeling absolute no effects from either of the previous two, I took another caffeine pill (against the instructions on the bottle). 10 minutes later, everything kicked in. I was too wired to do anything effectively. In retrospect, that was pretty dumb, and if I was in poorer physical condition, could have been potentially damaging. I don't drink Red Bull before shooting anymore, and the caffeine pills stay in the car.
  14. I didn't attend this match last year, but I heard that it was quite cold (snow, freezing temperatures, etc). What is the weather typically like in Wichita Falls during March?
  15. A similar standards (although the weak hand was at 5 yards, not 10) was shot at the 2002 Nationals in Bend. The HHF in Open was just over 7. HHF in Limited was just over 6.7.
  16. Just a bit of followup. Thanks to everybody that has helped me, both on and off the forum. Following the Area 1, where I had 4 stovepipes and a failure to extract that took about 6 seconds to clear, I installed a new 9mm/38 supercomp aftec extractor. I was a little concerned, because I'm no gunsmith, and I was worried more about fitting the firing pin stop to the slide than I was about fitting the aftec. I don't think the firing pin stop is perfectly fitted, because it's free to "wiggle" a little bit, but not enough that the extractor can turn. I've since shot the gun for over a month and about 2000 rounds without a single extraction problem. With the SVI 9mm breechface and the 9mm supercomp breechface coupled with the 9mm aftec (with both springs) I have a whopping 28 oz of tension. This might be a bit much, as the rounds are pretty darn tight in there, but I haven't had any feeding problems yet. I'm not entirely sure why the old setup ran so long without having frequent malfunctions, but the current setup seems to be working just fine now.
  17. Thanks for the input, guys. My springs are brand new (I keep a collection of 10 spares ) and I tumble my loaded rounds until they're super shiny. I'm going to try replacing the firing pin stop (in case it was installed incorrectly), change over to a 9mm Aftec and maybe replace the breechface (not all at the same time) and see if any of those are the culprit.
  18. I can't twist it at all, but it moves slightly forward and back. I can't measure it, but it goes from being flush with the rear of the slide to slightly indented. I'd say it can't be more than a couple thousandths of an inch though. The extractor hook seems to move pretty freely, but the bottom of the extractor looks (looking towards the breechface) like it might be just barely touching the bottom of the hole that it comes out of. At least, there's a lot more clearance to the top of the hole than to the bottom. Nope; the ejector is pinned pretty tight. Hmmm...A couple of the magazines will contact the ejector when inserted, but once the magazine catch engages and they are allowed to settle, I can see a sliver of daylight between the magazine and the ejector. There is a little worn spot where the magazines have contacted the ejector though.
  19. I've been having serious extraction problems lately. At the start of the season, I had a lot of stovepipe type malfunctions. I use a .38 super Aftec with one of the SVI 9mm breechfaces as I've been shooting Armscor .38 super rimless brass for the last few years. The ejection pattern was all over the place; some brass coming out at 2 o'clock, some going straight out at 3 o'clock, and even some brass going down at about 4 'clock. Worried that the rounds were hitting the scope mount, we removed it. No change; gun was still malfunctioning. Liberal applications of dyechem don't show any brass hitting any parts of the slide. I tried going from a 9lb to an 8lb spring with little success. I then decided to try putting in a new ejector and ordered one of the Brazos tuned ejectors. It was quite a bit longer than the old one, but it didn't seem to fix any of the ejection problems. Instead of getting stovepipes, I was getting lots of jams where the brass gets caught between the top of the breechface and the barrel hood; almost like the extractor is not holding the brass. I checked the extractor tension, and it's at 18oz and can easily hold a loaded round (I checked). I tried removing springs from the Aftec, and with 10oz of tension, it actually seemed to help a little bit. Somebody then suggested that maybe my recoil spring was too light, and suggested I bump it up to a 10lb spring. This seems to have made the ejection pattern more consistent (all of the rounds coming out at 2 o'clock or so) and the brass lands about 3 feet away from where I'm standing. I'm hoping that this is the solution to the problem, but I can't understand why. Can anybody explain to me how too light a recoil spring could be responsible for inconsistent ejection and malfunctions? Is it really as simple as changing the recoil spring, or should I be looking at some deeper problem which may rear it's ugly head up at a later date? I'm also using Montana Gold 115 grn JHP loaded to an OAL of 1.240" Thanks for any input. Chris
  20. I saw this same post and it intrigued me, because that's what I had interpreted the Sept 2002 rule to read. I was told I was incorrect and that Glock manufactured Extended Magazine releases were illegal for Production. However, taking this one step further... Suppose Glock were to make a Magazine well that was not available from the factory. ie, it was only available as an aftermarket part. (They don't, so the point is moot, but a good example) Would that be legal for Production Division?
  21. I'm glad that the general concensus seems to be that if a shooter pulls his (or her) hands away from start position screaming "NOTREADYNOTREADYNOTREADY" we wouldn't start the timer and assess penalties for creeping... However, what if a shooter did that just prior to the buzzer going off. That is, you as the RO are unable to stop the buzzer because you've pressed it at the instant that they're proclaiming their lack of readiness. Would you still stop them then? Assuming you woud plan to, but are a bit slow to issue the commands, and the shooter starts thinking that you're not going to allow them to restart. What if they go tearing off downrange to shoot their course of fire? Would I be justified in stopping them after the first couple of shots to allow them to restart?
  22. Thanks for all of the responses, folks. We settled on 3.6 grains of Titegroup under a Montana Gold 180 grn bullet. Out of a Glock 22 we were getting around a 134 pf and bursting out laughing with every shot we fired. It was like holding onto a mouse farting.
  23. Okay, after 4 years of shooting an open Foo-Foo gun, I decided to try shooting Production with a Glock 22. After spending a whole bunch of time trying to find a minor load (everybody seems to be trying to find ways of getting hotter and faster instead) we finally decided on 3.6 grains of Titegroup under a 180grn jacketed bullet. Other than the fact that the powder takes up so little case volume, has anybody run into any problems shooting that little powder in a case?
  24. I bought a case of Armscor 38 super rimless brass last year, and have used it all season. I was very meticulous about keeping track of how many loadings I went through on them. Basically, I used 2-3 firings with practice loads (162 PF, but we only need 160 in IPSC rules, not USPSA), before taking them to matches where I loaded 169 PF (115 grn Montana Gold JHP, 9.2 grns V3n37 Federal Small Rifle Primer loaded on Dillon 1050). I made it all the way up to 10 firings before any of the brass started to show any cracks at the case mouth, but I was losing most of my brass after about 5-6 firings anyways. Out of the case of 2500, I did have about 10 that were regular .38 super instead of rimless, but since I use a .223 shellplate, I caught those pretty quick. Some of the primer pockets seemed a bit tighter and resulted in primers that didn't quite seat as deep as the rest, but primers still seated fine and fired fine. 2 out of the case did not have a primer flash hole. Not having had any major problems with the brass, I plan on buying another 10k in the Spring, as soon as we can get import permits for the stuff.
