Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. So is general consensus that a Barstow or other quality barrel will get accuracy more or less up to snuff, or is the Lockwood slide necessary?
  2. As some have noted, it's single shot at least on my 20" del-ton. Two friends with 16" midlength uppers by the same manufacturer run it all the time, though they have occasional FTE issues as well.
  3. Never had a problem with the standard strippers and pmags either.
  4. They have a MILD steel core, not a hardened penetrator. When shot side by side with the 60 grain lead core silver bear and Barnaul loads, they penetrate mild and dent hardened steel LESS. My hardened steel targets don't get scratched. The intake manifolds and engine blocks have smaller craters on the 52 grain impacts. This is due to their lighter weight, lower MV, and soft core. The only AK ammo that endangers steel targets is the hardened steel core chinese 7.62x39. Learn something new every day- thanks.
  5. NO You show up to a match, drag the guns out, and everyone has to look! The questions start flowing and here come the explanations. Sterling just play dumb. It works for me! Yeah, my '74 is orange, so it's hard to hide. People around here have been smart enough recognize no AP 5.45 has been imported, and that I wouldn't blow my rare stash on a match if I had it. You'd think after years of surplus importation most numbskulls would have gotten the memo! I was under the impression that the generally dirt-cheap spam cans of (russian?) surplus all had steel penetrators? I realize that the commercial stuff is all the usual wolf/bear bimetal that wont damage anything.
  6. Interested in the answer to this as well- the price is definitely right, and CZ quality is generally quite good in my (limited) experience).
  7. Not saying i want to get all sorts of tacticool with a scope and front sight, I want to shoot just irons for a while and at least get proficient with them. I have an el-cheapo reflex sight on a .22, and it really seems like there isn't a huge learning curve shooting it, at least at the short ranges near me. Just want to follow the advice of some folks on here and mess around with irons for a few months or so, then decide if I want to go scoped. I only noted the flip up sights earlier so that I have the option to throw them on a non-game gun later (and I had heard some really good reviews of the magpul BUS). If there is a set of relatively reasonably priced fixed irons that people are a fan of, I'm fine with that as well.
  8. Once again, thanks for the help. I'll be going with irons to start, and transition to a good 1-4x or possibly aimpoint when I save up a bit more for good glass. Any recommendations on good front & rear irons (no A2 front sight on this one)? Kinda leaning toward some kind of flip up so that I can move them to another gun as backups if/when i mount a scope, but if there are good fixed ones for a reasonable price, i'd be fine with that as well (and if irons are as good as a lot of you guys say, might just forget about the scope).
  9. smokshwn and busyhwk, thanks for the replies- very helpful. I'm pretty agnostic as to barrel length (since this is pretty much just a fun gun), though being located in northern VA, very few local ranges are outdoor, and I don't think any that are other than a .mil range at quantico have anything over 200yds. I lean towards the 20" after what Shawn said regarding the recoil, as long as folks dont think it would be a big hinderance on shorter stages. Regarding the optic- my eyes aren't bad per se, but they aren't great, and I do like the idea of being able to use something like the Leupold 1-4x at some bigger matches where targets could be 200+ out. Thanks again for the help, you guys are great.
  10. Hey all- new to posting, though I've been lurking for a few months. I'm ordering my first evil black rifle in the next few days (del-ton kit on stag lower), and looking to use it primarily for local 2/3 gun events and for range play- HD is a bonus, but not really the point of the gun. I've searched for most of this stuff, but having a hard time finding answers, though I wouldnt be surprised if its all been gone over before. Anyway, my main questions are: 1) optic- it's been debated a million times, but I can't decide between the Aimpoint Comp C3, leupold VXII 1-4x, and vortex viper 1-4x. Heard great stuff about all of them- would the leupold/vortex be almost as fast when at 1x? I don't believe there are a ton of 200+yd 3 gun events around here, and none of these are terribly expensive, just curious if any of those are definite go/ no gos- haven't heard a ton about the C3, other than a few folks who say its the same as an ML3 with a 15ft submersion max. 2) related to optic- would it be worth it to have a front A2 sight for cowitness, a flip up on the gas block, or nothing at all? I imagine the answer is contingent on whether I'm going with the aimpoint or one of the 1-4x scopes? 3) gas system- I apologize in advance, as I'm new to the AR platform, but is there any reason to go with a mid-length gas system over a rifle-length on a 16" barrel? I've seen a number of folks recommend sticking with the rifle on an 18/20" barrel, would this hold true for a 16? Thanks in advance, if this has all been covered before, I apologize, but I'm having a hard time finding answers for anything other than the first question, which has been debated to the point it makes my head spin.
  11. Just the initials- I was a jr, and it just stuck after I was out of the house. No one calls me david except the gov't now. Thanks for the other replies, I had seen the North mtn shooters site before, but if I recall correctly, it hadnt been updated in some time so I didnt know if it was still active. Good to know. Anyone done IDPA or USPSA at the NRA range or at silver eagle?
  12. Hey all, been lurking here for a while, figure I'd introduce myself, Dj Sneeringer from arlington, VA. Looking to shoot pretty much anything right now, USPSA/IDPA to start, then work into 2/3 gun stuff as I buy the gear. Luckily it seems there are a number of events not too far away, though places to practice seem pretty scarce up this way. Glad to be a part of a great community.
