  2. Apparently Tom Petty has passed away at the age of 66 from a massive heart attack. Tom left home early in life to escape an abusive father. Interesting note is Tom was taught guitar by Don Felder of the Eagles. We'll miss you Tom.

    Lawn Issues

We have the standard 6 ft. fence in the backyard, and a few months ago, I heard about burglaries increasing dramatically in the entire city. To make sure this never happened to me, I got an electric fence and ran a single wire along the top of the fence. Actually, I got the biggest cattle charger Tractor Supply had, made for 26 miles of fence. I then used an 8 ft. long ground rod, and drove it 7.5 feet into the ground. The ground rod is the key, with the more you have in the ground, the better the fence works. One day I’m mowing the back yard with my cheapo Wal-Mart 6 hp big wheel push mower. The hot wire is broken and laying out in the yard. I knew for a fact that I unplugged the charger. I pushed the mower around the wire and reached down to grab it, to throw it out of the way. It seems as though I hadn’t remembered to unplug it after all. Now I’m standing there, I’ve got the running lawnmower in my right hand and the 1.7 giga-volt fence wire in the other hand. Keep in mind the charger is about the size of a marine battery and has a picture of an upside down cow on fire on the cover. Time stood still. The first thing I notice is my pecker trying to climb up the front side of my body. My ears curled downwards and I could feel the lawnmower ignition firing in the backside of my brain. Every time that Briggs & Stratton rolled over, I could feel the spark in my head. I was literally at one with the engine. It seems as though the fence charger and the piece of shit lawnmower were fighting over who would control my electrical impulses. Science says you cannot crap, pee, and vomit at the same time. I beg to differ. Not only did I do all three at once, but my bowels emptied 3 different times in less than half of a second. It was a Matrix kind of bowel movement, where time is creeping along and you’re all leaned back and BAM BAM BAM you just crap your pants 3 times. It seemed like there were minutes in between but in reality it was so close together it was like exhaust pulses from a big block Chevy turning 8 grand. At this point I’m about 30 minutes (maybe 2 seconds) into holding onto the fence wire. My hand is wrapped around the wire palm down so I can’t let go. I grew up on a farm so I know all about electric fences … but Dad always had those piece of shit chargers made by International or whoever that were like 9 volts and just kinda tickled. This one I could not let go of. The 8 foot long ground rod is now accepting signals from me through the permadamp Ark-La-Tex river bottom soil. At this point I’m thinking I’m going to have to just man up and take it, until the lawnmower runs out of gas. ‘Damn!,’ I think, as I remember I just filled the tank! Now the lawnmower is starting to run rough. It has settled into a loping run pattern as if it had some kind of big lawnmower race cam in it. Covered in poop, pee, and with my vomit on my chest I think ‘Oh God please die …. Pleeeeaze die’. But nooooo, it settles into the rough lumpy cam idle nicely and remains there, like a big bore roller cam EFI motor waiting for the go command from its owner’s right foot. So here I am in the middle of July, 104 degrees, 80% humidity, standing in my own backyard, begging God to kill me. God did not take me that day …. he left me there covered in my own fluids to writhe in the misery my own stupidity had created. I honestly don’t know how I got loose from the wire …. I woke up laying on the ground hours later. The lawnmower was beside me, out of gas. It was later on in the day and I was sunburned. There were two large dead grass spots where I had been standing, and then another long skinny dead spot where the wire had laid while I was on the ground still holding on to it. I assume I finally had a seizure and in the resulting thrashing had somehow let go of the wire. Upon waking from my electrically induced sleep I realized a few things: 1 – Three of my teeth seem to have melted. 2 – I now have cramps in the bottoms of my feet and my right butt cheek (not the left, just the right). 3 – Poop, pee, and vomit when all mixed together, do not smell as bad as you might think. 4 – My left eye will not open. 5 – My right eye will not close. 6 – The lawnmower runs like a sumbitch now. Seriously! I think our little session cleared out some carbon fouling or something, because it was better than new after that. 7 – My nuts are still smaller than average yet they are almost a foot long. 8 – I can turn on the TV in the game room by farting while thinking of the number 4 (still don’t understand this???). That day changed my life. I now have a newfound respect for things. I appreciate the little things more, and now I always triple check to make sure the fence is unplugged before I mow. The good news, is that if a burglar does try to come over the fence, I can clearly visualize what my security system will do to him, and THAT gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling all over, which also reminds me to triple check before I mow.
  4. Its a two edged sword Paul. The heavy rifle weighs more so it gives you less recoil force and its more stable when shooting in very windy conditions. However its tough to carry for any length of time. When shooting stand "Awful hand" position its better to have a heavier rifle especially if the wind starts blowing.
  5. Want a heavy one or light and want one you can make yourself or you want to buy one? Making them yourself is fairly simple. Go to a fabric store get a water resistant canvas type material and shoe-goo glue. Cut the fabric so you have two equal size pieces. You put them inside to inside and shoe-goo three sides of it. Let it dry/cure. Then fill to your desired firmness with the plastic beads you get from craft stores they sell to fill stuffed beanie babies type dolls. Once its full to your liking seal the 4th edge with shoe-goo. The beads won't absorb water so if you're shooting on a rainy day you'll be ok and they're a heck of a lot lighter than sand so you can carry it and run/gun with it.
  6. I heard a few that i thought were pretty good: "Its the Indian not the arrow" "Most people don't need a $1500 AR-15. What they DO need is a $700 AR-15 and $800 worth of training." "You can't miss fast enough to win."
  7. Went with a group of inexperienced shooters to a public range. Somehow my Kydex EGA mag pouch with 2 Glock 17 mags in it was either left there when we left or "disappeared" while I was busy coaching one of the new shooters. Called there and no mags or pouches were found. Really burns my buttons.
  8. There is no such thing as "too much ammo" .......unless you are swimming.
  9. During your racking the slide process attempting to clear your malfunction your finger DID enter the trigger guard for a brief moment. Watch the video carefully and you can see it. Happens about the 10-11 second mark.
  10. If it's black and has velcro on it? It's "Tactical" and some SWAT cop will buy it.
  11. Hey Scott,

    You still around here?

  12. Found this: 10.4.3 A shot which occurs while loading, reloading or unloading a handgun. This includes any shot fired during the procedures outlined in Rule ....
  13. I seem to recall a previous discussion, possibly in the rules section of the forum, where it was discussed about a A.D. being a DQ offense even if it happens during the COF and not at ULSC. If Im remembering correctly the question was about a guy firing an unintended shot while in the act of reloading. The shot went downrange and was "safe" in that it didn't hit anything bad but the RO DQ'd him. I wish I remembered what rule he was DQ'd under. The thread was quite some time ago which is probably why I'm having such trouble remembering it.
  14. Wouldn't it still be a DQ for an A.D. ? I can't recall the rule off the top of my head but I think I remember there being something about a situation where you can be DQ'D is firing a shot when not intending to even if it's during your firing the match and not when in the ulsc process.

    Short funny jokes

I was driving home and day dreaming and didn't realize that traffic had stopped. I looked up but couldn't stop in time and hit the car in front of me. I pulled over behind the car I'd hit and got out and was looking at the damage to the very nice cadillac I'd hit and wondering how I'd pay for the damage when the driver of the caddy walked up. He was a dwarf. He says very loud and angrily " I'm NOT happy!" SO I said "Well then...which one are you?" And that officer is how the fight started.
  16. A very knowledgable sniper once told me "If you take a $3,000 rifle and put a $500 scope on it you know what you now have? A $500 rifle." Good glass costs big bucks. Around 2 grand is where you should begin your quest. If thats the top of your budget then I'd suggest Nightforce. I have a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15 50mm with illuminated reticle (Mil Dot) Good piece of glass that (at the time) cost me around $1200 Ive won some stuff with it so its a good rifle/glass combo. If you can part with more $ then possibly a Schmidt and Bender scope. Their glass is hard to beat. Get Badger base and rings. They mill everything together in sets so theres no issues with having to lap the rings. As long as your gunsmith mounts things correctly you'll have no problems with them. Good luck with whatever you decide to put on your rifle.
  17. Great stuff. I find (for myself) my preparation routine is based on things I have messed up in prior matches to make sure I never do that again. I think Hitman said something about checking all his mags on his belt to ensure they were fully loaded. Been there done that. Whatever routine you adopt IMHO the best thing is to NOT DEVIATE from it unless theres a good reason to. Usually nerves are acting up a little especially for those of us who don;t get to hit the range as much as we'd like to so a solid routine is a big help. Nothing worse than having your belt with 2 of your mags being semi loaded AFTER you've started the stage.
  18. I clean if I'm not going to shoot again within the next week to ten days and I've fired less than 150 rounds to that point. To then clean I use Hoppes #9 soaked into a couple patches one after the other. I then leave the rifle alone for the next half hour or more. Then patch again (dry) to check for cleanliness level. If necessary I repeat trying to not use brushes unless REALLY dirty. Once powder fouling is out I spray Gun Scrubber down the barrel. Let it dry. Then I use Sweets to get out the copper fouling. Only leave sweets in the barrel for maybe 10 minutes or so. Then patch it out checking for blue color. I may use more if still detecting blue coming out. Once its out I again spray gun scrubber down the barrel. The rifle gets put away "Cold, Clean, and Dry" which is the only true repeatable condition for cold bore shots.
  19. Had a Versamax come into the local shop....and go out the same day. Guy came in and without even asking just took one look at it and it was SOLD. They're ordering more but were told it might take a little while to get because they're so popular now. Floor has been stained and 2 coats of polyurethane is on and cured. Waiting on cabinet delivery on Tuesday. Install begins after Christmas. Then its new gun shopping for me!
  20. For a deer rifle? Throw a 3X-10X Leopold with Badger rings and mount on it and use it as is. Little more? Get it bedded by a good competent gunsmith. Little more? Possibly consider a custom barrel by Hart, Mike Rock, Krieger, etc...If you ask a dozen guys what barrel to use you'll likely get a dozen answers but you can't go wrong with one of those. Little more? Scope? A week ago I'd of said Nightforce NXS model 3.5X-15X if you want to just go a little crazy. Seriously crazy? A week ago I'd of said US Optics or Schmidt and Bender. But two days ago I find out that Steiner is coming out with a new one for long range 5X-25X 56mm objective. Model is T5xi Big honking piece of glass but its going (IMHO) to take the scope market by storm. Price point is right around $2200-$2300 MSRP. I know it sounds like a lot of $ but consider that the market share they're competing against is Schmidt and Bender and US Optics whose comparable models is around $3500-$4000msrp Has a lifetime warranty that IS transferable. The glass is made in Germany. Everything else is done at a factory in the US (I believe its in Colorado). I'm liking what I'm hearing about this scope so far. My local shop has 3 on order and it hasn't even been officially unveiled at SHOT yet.
  21. Wife spent HOURS shopping the other day with a major retailer online and had a metric crap ton of stuff in her virtual cart. She hits "Check Out" and the screen changes and tells her theres nothing in her shopping cart. You could've heard her rant two states over and she'll be saying a LOT of Hail Marys and Our Fathers for some of those words.
  22. Stephen Hunter is the man! ....but he did not write Flight of The Intruder. You're thinking of Steven Coonts....who is another great writer with his Jake Grafton character books. As for Hunter...The Bob Lee Swagger character is a great one. Start with "Point Of Impact" and go on from there.
  23. No sweat jroback. I am the avid reader in my family and on a rainy day theres nothing better than a warm fire, a quiet room, and a good book.
  24. Now reading "Deshi" by John Donohue (Conner Burke Martial Arts series) I think most of the guys and gals here would enjoy them not just for their entertainment value but for the concepts in them that relate to shooting. I'm on the second book in the series and really enjoying them so far.
